Summary: Before the pool tournament unfolds. A look into Johnny's mindset.

Flynn's a crazy motherfucker. Johnny's done a whole hell of lot of things for him...no questions asked. He keeps his head down and his phone lines open and gets the job done.

He's a go-to-guy. He always has been. You want an expensive night out on the town with a high stakes game in the back room...? Johnny McBain can find it for you. You want a fifteen-year-old Thai hooker who knows every trick in the proverbial pillow book...? Johnny McBain knows where to pick her up.

It's what he does.

It's what makes him so useful to Flynn and Flynn's operation.

But he's uneasy now. Questions on the tip of his tongue. He hears himself hedging conversations that used to be two sentences long. "Do it." "You got it." This was supposed to be an easy gig. Fly out to B.F.E. Pennsylvania, take over for Rack 'Em...guide this sweet little cookie right where they needed her to be.

Only "this sweet little cookie" turned out to be sharp around the edges. Her soft voice hiding steel...her hips all hot and hard when he leaned in to show her how to angle her cue. He tapped her one way and she banked off the cushions and surprised the living Hell out of him.

It's easy to say he's going soft because he wants to fuck her. That's obvious. He thinks about her silky red hair trailing across his stomach... her lips wrapping around him...her fingers sliding over him. He thinks about bending her over, splaying her out on the felt and stroking right between her thighs. Eight ball in the corner pocket. Game over.

But he's wanted to fuck chicks before and it's never *gotten* to him. He's proud of his apparent lack of depth. Of his tunnel vision. He's shallow. What you see in Johnny is exactly what you get.

The problem is...Natalie Buchanan...Natalie Buchanan *Vega*... sees right through him. He can't fool her. He can't feed her a line. She sees something in him...something he didn't know existed. A Johnny McBain who's about more than just the score, the job, the game.

And he's beginning to think he'll be useless without her.

Useless to Flynn.

Which means he'll be dead.

Shit.

If you want to break up a brand-new marriage...Johnny McBain knows how to do that, too.

He's not dying without having her at least once. Without making it worth his while.

And he knows exactly just how to set up the table so she rolls right into his bed.

Johnny's a go-to-guy.

The best in the business.
